Foss Maritime, founded by the matriarch of the Foss family in 1889, is as much a cultural icon on the U.S. West Coast as McAllister or Moran are on the East Coast. Norwegian immigrant Thea Foss began the business when she bought her first row boat in Tacoma, Wash. and painted it the signature green and white. The Foss family grew the business into a launch  service ferrying crew and supplies in the 1910s, then shifted into towing work in the 1940s.

In partnership with Van der Leun, a European based electrical engineering company AKA was fortunate enough to co-exhibit the Xeropoint Hybrid System. After working extensively with Van der Leun on the Kotug RT Adriaan hybrid retrofit, we have developed a partnership that will allow both parties to benefit from current and future projects.

Recently, WorkBoat technical editor Bruce Buls visited Foss Maritime's Rainier Shipyard on the Columbia River to get a look at the tug Campbell Foss as it undergoes conversion from traditional propulsion to hybrid technology. Buls got a chance to speak with VP Susan Hayman and project manager Rick McKenna about just what the conversion entails for this Dolphin-class tug, similar to the Carolyn Dorothy, which was purpose-built as a hybrid.

AKA Partners with Kotug to Deliver Europe’s First Hybrid Ekotug

Aspin, Kemp and Associates (AKA) announced the construction of Europe’s first hybrid tugboat in partnership with KOTUG International. The Rotor Tug Adriaan, presently operating in the Port of Rotterdam, will be retrofitted with a XeroPoint Hybrid Propulsion System. This conversion will be completed in the fourth quarter of 2011 and will be the first EKOTUG to join the KOTUG fleet.
