On April 21st, 2022 CBC news covered the announcement of the Canadian Federal and Provincial Governments’ investment of $3 million into the adaptation of efficient hybrid and electric engines for fishing boats. In their article, they highlighted AKA’s very own hybrid lobster fishing boat which was unveiled at the boat show in Moncton earlier in April.

The funding will enable fishermen to invest in the hybrid system at significantly lower CAPEX, helping AKA’s rollout of the hybrid fishing boat system. AKA’s technology leads to significant fuel savings and emissions reductions in the fishing industry. Egmont MP Bobby Morrissey said, “ I truly believe in 10 years, we’ll see the common power amongst fishing boats being a combination of hybrid-electric and diesel”. The P.E.I. Fishermen’s Association hopes to launch the first hybrid test boats in the fall.
